: I am trying to arrange a "surprise" 40th birthday trip for my hubbie to either the San Siro or Noucamp to see one of his favourite european teams. His 40th is on 02 May 2003 and I want to gather as much info. as I can on the feasibility of this happening because I know the tickets for home games are hard to come by.
: Can anyone help or point me in the right direction.

First thing - don't buy match tickets in UK if you can possibly avoid it. Agents will rip you off. We went to Juventus for a game after declining Agents' offer of 70 per ticket and bought 3 for a total of 35 at the turnstile! Italian grounds are rarely full up (because they are so big). Plenty of Italians buy from touts on matchday (as turnstile queues of often very long).

Secondly - buy a copy of the Rough Guide to European football. Should tell you everything you need to know.

Thirdly - fly by Ryannair, GO or Easyjet. After checking which weekend match is scheduled for book well ahead, preferably by getting early morning Saturday flight and Monday return thus ensuring you are covered if they switch match to Saturday/Sunday night for TV. Sorted!
