Good point Dermot - Also, as part of this, if todays referees were salaried and professional most of their performances wouldn't be tolerated.
After seeing a few lower league games recently, I honestly believe that the referees in the 1st and 2nd divisions are far superior to the ones in the premier league - at least the ones in the lower divisions aren't trying to make a name for themselves - they're generally just refereeing the game - you shouldn't even KNOW the names of referees.
I think it's sad that as soon as I hear Liverpool and Elleray, Wilkerson, Poll, Gallacher and a few others I think 'Oh shit!' and I'm normally right to be nervous.
It's so obvious, it's untrue - but, again, when Man U get decisions against them (Elleray, D'urso) then these referees didn't referee a Man U game for NINE MONTHS!! NINE MONTHS!!!?!?! And there isn't something dodgy going on?!
